I invite you to take a journey with me; a journey back in time to when you crammed all your belongings into every nook and cranny in your itty bitty dorm room and watched your parents drive off into the sunset. You probably remember the swell of emotions – the excitement, the sense of freedom… and, if we’re being really honest with ourselves, a little bit of fear and loneliness.
Now, take a moment to reflect on what made you want to join a sorority. I can’t imagine you thought trekking from house to house in your best clothes and heels (don’t forget this was on the hottest or snowiest day of the year), sipping punch and answering the same questions over and over sounded like the time of your life! Were you looking for an easy way to make friends and meet new people in an unfamiliar environment? Did you like the social aspect or leadership opportunities? Or were you active in your home community and searching for an outlet to continue your service? Maybe it was searching for a place you could be who you are and call home? For each of us, the reason may have been different, but yet we were all drawn together by Alpha Chi Omega.
Whatever your reason for joining a sorority in the first place is the reason to be involved now. As we go through life, we are bound to encounter situations that are unfamiliar, evoking some of the same emotions we experienced our first days of college. Maybe you are relocated for a job or looking for a job? Some of you may be newlywed or newly single. Others might find themselves in a circle of friends that all have kids when they have none. Isn’t it comforting to know that our bonds are forever strong?
There’s really no excuse not to be involved. It’s less expensive than the dues we paid in college. Events are a great way to meet up with friends and make new ones. There are leadership opportunities spanning a multitude of areas and time commitments. We serve our community.
Nu Nu is committed to providing a broad range of opportunities and social gatherings that appeal to all, whether you’re enjoying retirement, a working mom, a “Chief Household Officer” or a singleton. That’s why you’ll see more “All Chapter Events” on this year’s calendar than ever before. We want every sister to have events they can really look forward to – and if there’s not one that’s up your alley we want to know that too.
So here’s this year’s President’s challenge – I invite each of you to become dues-paying members and attend at least one All Chapter Event this year. And for those that already do this, I challenge each of you to recruit someone to join in our fun.
Loyally,
Kirstin Floberg Barbour
